INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:
- Make students aware of the importance of creating a safe trusting environment, where children can focus
on learning.
- Put forth a “dream school” concept.
- Understanding of how behavior can be a precursor to more drastic behavior, recognizing signs.
- Show that schools in Urban, Suburban, or Rural areas may all have their distinct issues they can share
a lot of the same.
- Explain how larger social issues have a trickle down affect on the young people, how these pressures can
affect their experiences in school.
RATIONALE:
If we all want to go on
to become teachers it is best that we go in with our eyes open and our heads filled with possible solutions and plenty of
energy. The struggles will be plentiful, but with the right tools and attitude
we might just make a difference to a few people.
LESSON CONTENT:
Chapter 5; pages 201-204
- What steps can educators take to create a more supportive school environment?
- Can you envision a school that works?
- How does the recent school violence fit into this discussion?
- Are any schools exempt from these problems?
- How are societies problems mirrored in the schools?
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
- Focusing Event
- Statistic on school violence in last 25 yrs
- # of children with mental issues
- Statement/Challenge of are we going to let it stay that way or get worse. (attempt to evoke emotion)
- Teaching Procedures
- PowerPoint with short details to keep visual interest
- Lecture/Discussion (multiple members of group)
- Roll play possible solutions (make it demonstrative; humorous but get the point across)
- Formative Check
- Questions after certain slides
- Recap information ‘pressure’ points
- Student Participation
- Discussion
- Closure
- Wish for the future that encapsulates the bigger issues.
- A take away thought.
